My Summer Through iPhone Pics

Last February, with the wind howling and snow blowing in Illinois...

Mr. Musky: "This summer, I think you should stay at the cabin the entire time the kids are at camp."

Me (with fingers crossed behind my back): "But I'll feel bad that you are in Illinois working, and I'll miss you."

Mr. Musky: "Are you kidding? You should do it. I'll commute back and forth, and you can work on the book."

Me: "Well, OK. If you're sure."

Without a single display of emotion, I sauntered into the other room until I was out of sight, then fist pumped, leapt in the air, wrapped myself in a big bear hug and grinned like a Cheshire cat while performing my own version of a very bad happy dance.

Fast forward, and I only have one week left of blissfully cool seventy degree days and sixty degree nights that sometimes dare to dip into the fifties. I can count on one hand the number of days I've run the air conditioner. There is plenty to say about my time Up North this summer, but I'm supposed to be working on a behemoth task that sucks my brain dry daily, otherwise known as "the good book" by my
indulgent pre teenager. According to him, he'd like me to finish it already so I can buy him a Sea Doo 210 Wake Boat with the signing bonus.

So rather than telling the story about how freakishly awesome it is to do this, or how the view of the lake saves me from pounding my head against the kitchen table to break writer's block, or the absolutely delightful weekend we just spent with good friends in heaven - I mean Bayfield and the Apostle Islands - I'll show you what I've been up to this summer in photos from my phone.

More to come later on the heaven thing.

Backtracking a bit - here's one of the aforementioned spoiled offspring in May after a Canal Wall Down Mastoidectomy to remove another cholesteatoma in his left ear, and Ossiculoplasty to insert new prostheses in the middle ear. Yeah - don't bother looking this crap up - it's major ear surgery and was a really crummy way to start the summer for us all - no swimming, wake boarding, tubing or any activity that can jar the head. Not fun. But - he's better now and is enjoying all the waterfront activities at Camp Menominee. Yay!

Twilight on Echo Lake

Sunset Cruise
Our new Northwoods ride...Helga! She is so much fun to toodle around in up here. The kids love riding in her with their friends to cool off with ice cream.

The Boss croons in my fantasyland while I cruise around in her feeling all hip and twenty-something:

... roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's bustin' open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real, to trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand, riding out tonight out to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road

Another hospital procedure - this time for the eldest. She's fine, but unfortunately inherited the dastardly acid reflux condition from the paternal side of things. She's now living it up at Chippewa Ranch Camp!

Her finger was glowing. We played E.T. We're kinda weird like that.

New 'do. Got me some bangs. They're funky.

I woke up one morning to this. Somebody in my house got feisty after I went to bed, and he violently stabbed an insolent styrofoam cup into submission. With several knives. Sometimes I am afraid of my surroundings.

That very spoiled son? Has big dreams. Including this Rolex he would like to don on his wrist someday. Get a good paying job, Buddy.

Stopped at a gas station up here in dees parts. This is what we see. That's a large stuffed bunny roped down in the back of the mudded-up truck. And there were three little bunnies wired to the grille. I sometimes wonder if I truly exist in the same world as others, or if I was dropped here from the Alien Mother Ship and she's gonna fly in and rescue me someday.

What happens when Mr. Musky is in charge of dinner during summer camp. He cooks steak and potatoes to perfection over the campfire, I sip wine, and Miller wanders aimlessly.

What happens when I cook for myself during summer camp. Shrimp and salad.

Trying to find my muse on the boat one morning with my partner. He's bored and wants to go on a ride instead.

So I obliged. He's carefree and happy!

Then pooped.

Then patiently waits for that bobber to drop in the water. It rarely does.

Daytime thunderstorms rock, but are slightly eerie and unnerving. Perhaps I should be writing a murder mystery that takes place at 2:00 in the afternoon when the sky darkens with a passing storm? Mysterious villain disguised as a giant gorilla violently attacks aspiring author as she eats bonbons and watches the Olympics in the middle of the day?  Hmmmmmmm.

View out our Condo window in Bayfield with Madeline Island in the background and a storm rolling in.

View out the porthole of the Dreamcatcher sailboat.

Hot Mess. I love her so, and she makes me laugh to the point of my personal danger zone.

Patting the kitty at the condo. There were two. The other one likely ran away and hid in fear due to our smothering love the night before.

One of the many fabulous gardens on the property where we stayed.

Tired boy from DOGercise by Linnaea in Rhinelander.

Feeling blessed and grateful...
